Andrea Grundt Johns - Forest Glass & Fern Crystals

Forest Glass & Fern Crystals
Andrea Grundt Johns

Opening August 31st 18:00-20:00
Oslo Prosjektrom, Platous gate 18

If we reduce a fern* to ashes, which we dissolve in pure water, then allow the water to evaporate, we obtain lovely crystals that have the form of a fern frond.

Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

The great daydreamer is first bewildered by nature, then bewitched by his own dreams – man’s fantasy can easily surpass natures, Gaston Bachelard writes in The Poetics of Space. He speaks of a time long before our scientific world, a time when the borders between scientific theories and vast daydreams were blurred.
How does nature bewilder and bewitch the daydreamer of today? Are we still able to dream of fern ash turning into crystals? Forest Glass & Fern Crystals is a re-enactment and investigation of the fern's mystical past and our relation to nature in today’s world, through a camera-less and sculptural photography.

Andrea Grundt Johns (b. 1989, Oslo) holds a BFA in Photography from Akademin Valand in 2015. Johns explores tactile and phenomenological approaches to photography. Through this she seeks to disrupt a visually saturated everyday and question the traditional understanding of photography. As a result, her works often moves towards the empty, believing emptiness to be full of potential. Trying to trigger the viewer’s imagination and attention, she searches for new ways of seeing.
Her practice also includes several collaborations and artist run publishing and exhibition projects.
